Academics & Curriculum

The Montessori Framework

Elementary curriculum uses "The Great Stories" as a springboard for interdisciplinary learning. There are five Great Lessons that are introduced: The Coming of the Universe, The Timeline of Life, The Timeline of Humans, The Story of Math, and The Story of Language. In this way, children learn about their place in the universe.

Each of these lessons initiates curiosity or interests connected to other academic areas. These stories spark the imagination of Elementary students and give them a context for deeper engagement and learning.

Montessori Elementary students discover the interrelationship between subject areas and understand how math, language, science and history are connected and important for understanding and learning.

Achieving Excellence in Core Content Areas

Our Teacher-Leaders both have distinguished backgrounds in both traditional and innovative education settings, including guiding students to achieving the Common Core State Standards. Students will be supported to excel in the core content areas within our Montessori classrooms.

Going Out

The Montessori practice of “going out” begins at the Elementary level as children express curiosity for the world around them. These student-inspired and collaboratively planned trips offer children a way to explore beyond the classroom. Going out allows students to explore, research, and apply their knowledge outside the traditional classroom setting, while also fostering independence, responsibility, and practical life skills. “When the child goes out, it is the world itself that offers itself to him. Let us take the child out to show him real things instead of making objects which represent ideas and closing them in cupboards.” – Dr. Maria Montessori.

Anti-Racism and Inclusivity

Our Teacher-Leaders are committed to cultivating an anti-racist, equitable, and inclusive learning environment. We tailor instruction to be culturally relevant, reflecting the racial, linguistic, and religious diversity of our students and their families. We believe students can meaningfully contribute to the elimination of prejudice from our communities and institutions. We create safe, empowering spaces for students to explore themes of justice and equity in the context of our local community, and support them in their efforts to contribute to remedying injustice.
